This is a brief history of the Old School on the Hill as we have been told. 

Thank you for visiting us and come relax as you reminisce about how time has past.

The Old School was built in 1876 on a reported Indian mound overlooking a bustling river/railroad town. The two plus story brick has changed dramatically. By 1896 the school was bursting at the seams. An additional two rooms were added in 1896. A bell tower soon followed with a clock that can still be heard through-out town reminding us of the current time and the pace of small town living.

The year1923 was a big year for this building; the school was installed with indoor plumbing and restrooms. The first four year graduating class of nine received their diplomas. 

In 1942, the school again made a drastic change.  After the spring term the children carried their books down the hill to the new school site on Highway K. 

It is amazing that the Old School has only had three owners, the school district, a private individual and the American Legion Post 506. The American Legion owned the building since 1942. During their ownership many memories were made:  wedding receptions, teen-town, dances, barbeques, and during WWII meals were served. In 1950 when the neighboring town, Morrison, lost their school building to fire, the American Legion opened its doors to students again until the School on Hwy K could be enlarged. In 1993 it provided temporary housing for numerous volunteers during the flood of 1993.

In 2003 it was placed on the National Historical Registry.

In 2005 the Old School On The Hill was purchased by Joe and Charlotte Schaperclaus and subsequently the Bed and Breakfast LLC was formed by Charlotte, Dawn and Becky Schaperclaus.

In 2007 Old School On The Hill Bed and Breakfast LLC was opened. 

Though there have been many changes to the Old School on the Hill over the years, one thing still remains the same.  Time may change the appearance, but the ol’ gal still stands.
